Cake in a Box - Tutorial

This is the "how to" tutorial for the box which contains the cake in the center posted this week on my blog. This generic tutorial is to enable focusing on the assembly process of this project. Finished project should look like the following photo:

The Lid with 2" sides:
  • Cut (1) 8-1/8" x 8-1/8" Solid Card Stock or Designer Paper
  • Score 2" along all sides
  • Use bone folder for crisp fold on score lines
  • Cut as indicated in the photo
  • Apply sticky tape to secure lid flaps
  • Finished lid size should be 4-1/4" x 4-1/8" (box size is 4x4. Lid needs to be +1/8" larger)

Tip:

  • for narrower sides, CS should be cut down accordingly: for example, 1-1/2"+4-1/8"+1-1/2" = 7-1/2" square.
  • Decorate the lid before or after it is assembled.

Finished lid:

The Box:

  • Use (1) 12" x 12" card stock or Designer Paper
  • Score every 4", turn paper and score every 4".
  • Use bone folder for crisp fold lines
  • Cut as shown in the photo below

Tip:

  • Decorate each 4" square as desired. Be sure to keep embellishments to a minimum since the sides will be "wrapping" around. The possibilities are endless.
  • For the center: No cake die? Glue down a toy , a photo frame, a surprise,( max height 4" high), or how about a smaller box in the center with pull out photos!........

To achieve the "wrap around" look of the box, start "wrapping the sides of the box by picking up the first section as shown in the photo:

The second "wrap":

The third "wrap":

The final "wrap:

Last step - place lid on top!

Now that wasn't so bad...................hope you will try this project and enjoy decorating it for yourself or for a gift to someone special! Have a great weekend.

Cake in a Box: Asian Influence

I finally decided to use the Ginger Blossom Designer Paper even though it is retired........it fits this project perfectly!

Here's the close-up photo of the lid: A single layer cake is topped with die cut butterflies, silk flowers, and die cut leaves. The cake sits on top of an Octagon shaped platter. Small silk flowers are nestled at the base of the butterflies.

Below photo with the lid removed, slightly revealing inside:

Top view of inside with lid removed. See how sides "wrap around" to form a box:

Top view of the box completely opened:

View of the cake in the center:

Front and back view of the cake. Butterflies and die cut leaves along with silk flowers embellish this cake.
Close-up view of the top right/left corner and bottom right/left corners. Octagon shape are die cut and then stamped. A photo can easily be positioned in these sections.

This is a close-up of the stamps used for the bottom center section. Stamp the image in Black ink, then stamp the designer paper-cut out and adhere as shown.

This is the Fan Stamp used for the top center section. Stamp in black ink on the Real Red, then stamp on the Designer Paper, cut out, adhere as shown.

This photo shows the template I made before the actual words were stamped positioned (gotta plan!). The words were stamped, punched out using 1-1/4" Square punch, then Tag corner punch used.

Here's all the Asian Word stamps used (from http://www.stampmagick.com/)
Supplies:

Cake in a Box: Disney Princess

5-28-09 added info: Disney Princess Stamp set can be found on line. The larger set is www.ritzcamera.com/EP67014101.htm and the smaller set used for the cake is www.ritzcamera.com/EP56317392.htm
This project was fun but took longer than I expected...........maybe because I design "on the fly" and there is a lot of coloring. The Pink Pirouette lid has many layers of soft colors: Pretty in Pink, Whisper White, Pink Pirouette. One of the layers is stamped using the swirl from the Perfect Princess set, embossed in white. The Pink Pirouette layer is stamped with the swirl stamp using Pink Pirouette ink for subtle effect. Top it off with the crown from the set and "bling", along with the embossed white Princess word: all on dimensionals. 1" Pink Organdy ribbon is tied around the lid.

Here's a close-up view of the lid. Note: the bling is attached using tweezers and Tombow Glue.

Side view of the lid showing the many layers and dimensionals used.

Front view of the Cake in Pretty in Pink CS. "Princess" is stamped after computer generated Emma was printed. All images on the cake are with 1-1/4" Circles in Pink Pirouette, attached using Tombow glue to the cake.

Back of the cake:

Here's the box "flat" showing all the images on the squares. All squares are stamped using Pink Pirouette ink swirl stamp.

Close-up view on the "Happy Birthday" square. The glitter is applied using Stickles freehand.

The mirror has Stickles glitter applied. Butterflies are colored using Stampin' Write Pretty in Pink and Pink Passion.

Some of the carriage is outlined using the Stampin' Write Pretty in Pink pen while the leaves are using Old Olive. Stickles is applied on the outline of the carriage

And, here is the Birthday girl: Her name using the Big Shot exclusive SU Billboard die, and the Castle roofs shine with Stickles glitter. Swirl under the name is done freehand using Stickles. Don't forget to color in the heart in the castle using Stampin' Write Pretty in Pink Pen.

So how was this project made? The images on the squares are clear stamps from EK Success. Once upon a time, they were available from Target - these got snatched up very quickly. I had to go to a few store to find a set. Each image is stamped using Staz-On ink, then colored using various SU Stampin' Write pens. Of course, I'd forgotten the color in each Princess so had to turn to the Disney site for help! Thank goodness for the Internet. A corner rounder was used after all images were colored. Tip: make sure enough time is planned for coloring all images.

The 2nd clear stamp used is also from EK Success. It is a separate purchase from a local craft store. They are the perfect size for the cake: 1" in diameter! Then 1-1/4" punched Pink Pirouette is used to frame the image. (Plan enough images around the cake to avoid unnecessary coloring).

Supplies:

  • EK Success Princess Stamps, SU Perfect Princess, SU Elegant Greetings (retired since 1999)
  • CS: Pink Pirouette, Pretty in Pink, Whisper White
  • Ink: Staz-On Black, Pretty in Pink, Versamark
  • Accys: 1" Pink Organdy Ribbon, White Embossing Powder, Corner Rounder, Dimensionals (non SU), 1" Circle Punch, 1-1/4" Circle Punch, Scallop Circle Punch, Sticky Tape, Tombow Glue

Want to duplicate the coloring? Here is a detail list of the Stampin' Write Pens used to achieve the Disney look:

  • Real Red for all lips, Snow White Sleeve and hair band, Rose (1"), Belle's Dress (1")
  • Old Olive for Carriage leaves

Cake in a Box: Star Wars

"Cake in the Box" project with the Star War theme. Finished project size is 4" x 4". Stickers used for this project. (Very economical: $1.73 for 4 sheets total which includes tax). This Boy Birthday gift is quick to make. The Basic Grey lid is using stickers framed in Going Grey CS with a layer of Black CS. Dimensionals "lift" up both the sticker frames and Black CS. Don't forget to put a dimensional in the center so there are no "cave ins". Tie a Black satin ribbon around the lid. Lastly, attach a large punched star in the center using Tombow glue.

With the lid off, top view of the inside. See how the sides wrap "around" to the box?

This view shows the entire box "flat/opened" revealing stickers in each 3-3/4" square in Basic Grey and Going Grey. Multi color punched stars were used. Note the star colors co-ordinate with the stickers in each square. After all, this is "Star Wars".
Front view of the cake: Top layer and center is Going Grey, Mid layer and center is Basic Grey, Bottom layer and center is Black. Yes, this was planned. Various sticker images are placed around the cake using Tombow Glue.

Back of cake:

How does a cake project get made using stickers? Here's what I started out with. A package of stickers (4 sheets) purchased from a retail party store. These happen to be the perfect size (no more than 1-3/4" high). Cut out the images (keep back of stickers on for cut images).

These cut out stickers will be used for layering the cake.

For the lid, I kept the square format but chose to cut out the white frames around the sticker. Perfect for the lid! I just had to trim off a little to make the stickers square. Easy!
Supplies used:
  • Stamp: "Happy Birthday" from Penny Black
  • CS: Going Grey, Basic Grey, Black, Summer Sun, Tempting Turquoise, Kiwi Kiss, Real Red, Brilliant Blue
  • Ink: Black
  • Accys: Large Star Punch, Star Punch, Big Shot SU Naturally Serif die for "Jack", Tombow Glue, Sticky Tape, Dimensionals (non SU).

Thank you for stopping by.....may this inspire you to think about using stickers in another way (how about Hello Kitty stickers?)......stay tuned for another "cake in a box" project tom....xoxo.

Cake in a Box - Birthday

This was the best Birthday project to make. I've been wanting to make one of these for a while. It's a photo box with a cake: I call it a "Cake in a Box" - You'll see when the lid is off. This is a birthday present I hope will survive the postal trip from West Coast to East Coast! The color theme: Pink/Brown. Most edges are using a corner punch.

Here's a close-up of the lid. The silk flowers: bought at 90% off - yup, 90% off at a Summer clearance special. Originally a garland, I took the flowers apart for this project. I've used these flowers previously on a banner.
Here's a side view close-up of the lid: see all the dimensionals used on EACH layer? Make sure a dimensional is positioned in the center so there are no "cave ins". A pop-up glue dot was used for the silk flower.

Top View: the Lid is off revealing what is inside: a cake in the center with sides that wrap around with photos.

Lid underneath, having some extra punched hearts - here's what to do with them.

Close-up of the decorated Chocolate cake with hearts in the center. "Happy Birthday, Peggy" is computer generated. Attached tied bow with a mini glue dot. The cake sits on a "platter" with dimensionals to give it height. Be sure to put a dimensional in the center so the cake does not "cave in".

Top view of the project:

Side view of project - see the scattered punched hearts?

To make this finished project extra special, this stamp was used!

The following photos will reveal how the project was made.....all these pieces for the cake:

More pieces to complete the project (what a mess).....

This is how the flower was dismantled for the lid:

How to make the banner: Coluzzle used for the shape after words are computer generated. Attach to cake with a dimensional at the center.

Tip: if the Designer paper is a dark color: use a Stampin' Write Pen to cover the "white" edges at the top and don't forget the back where the seams meet. It just looks better.

After the basic cake is completed, position the photos and captions, along with the punched hearts. Now, the project can be finally glued down.

Supplies used:
  • Stamps: Define You Life, Dot background, On Your Birthday, Party Hearty, "Priceless" stamp from Inkadinkado
  • CS: Pretty in Pink, Close to Cocoa, Chocolate Chip, Pink Pirouette, Chocolate Chip Designer Paper, Whisper White
  • Ink: Black, Close to Cocoa
  • Accys: Corner Punch (SU retired), Dimensionals (non SU), 5/8" Regal Rose Grosgrain Ribbon, 3/8" Whisper White Taffeta Ribbon, Scallop Circle Punch, 5/8" Circle Punch (non SU), 1-1/4" Circle Punch, 1-3/8" Circle Punch, Heart to Heart Punch, Circle Scissor Plus Cutter, Pop-up Glue Dots, Mini Glue Dot, Big Shot Pop-Up Cake Die, Sticky Tape.

I have a couple more "Cake in a Box" to post this week.........so stay tuned. Need a tutorial or measurements - working on that, too.................thanks for stopping by.
