Chinese Lucky Money Holder

Can you read Chinese? The words are "Gung Hay Fat Choy" translation: "Wishing You Wealth & Happiness". The card front texture is made from layering the Lattice Die tone on tone. I was inspired to create this subtle background from a fellow blogger: Christine Miller (her blog http://www.mystamplady.com/) even though I didn't follow her technique to extend the lattice die length. This is the traditional color used for handing out Lucky Money. The brighter the gold color - the more luck you will have so I found the shiniest gold paper I had to use for this card. Finished project size is 5-1/2" x 3-3/4".

There is a tone on tone circle cut from the lattice die to embellish the inside cover:

Inside is the lucky envelope. The envelope is inside a clear cello bag. Of course, there is also shiny gold CS behind the envelope.

Here's what is needed to make this card:

(1) 5-1/2" x 11", score @5-1/2" on the 11" side

(2) Real Red SU Lattice Die Cuts

(1) 1-1/2" x 4-1/4" Really Shiny Gold CS

(1) 1-1/4" x 4" Natural Ivory CS

(1) Small Cello Bag 3" x 5", trim cello bag down to 4-1/2"

(1) Lucky Money Envelope (this one is 2-1/4" x 4")

(1) 3" x 4-1/2" Really Shiny Gold CS

Line up the Lattice dies to lightly mark and trim down 1/4" from the fold line (see Pink arrow). After trimming, adhere to front using 2 Way Glue Pen.

Stamp images on Naturals Ivory using Versamark ink. Emboss both images using black embossing powder. Mount the Asian words on to the strip of Shiny Gold CS. Adhere to front using dimensionals. Punch the "Year of the Tiger" Circle Image with 1-1/2" Circle Punch.

Color the "Year of the Tiger" image using Stampin" Write Pens. The Tiger is Crushed Curry, then layered with More Mustard. After coloring, adhere to the front of the Lucky Envelope, insert into the cello bag. Adhere cello bag to the back of the card using snail adhesive.

Chinese Take Out

This is a Year of the Tiger Take Out box containing paper fortune cookies. Finished box size is 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" x 3-1/4".

Close up of Take Out Box front: "Year of the Tiger" is a special one line stamp ordered from Stampin' Up. It is attached to the box using mini glue dots.

Inside contents:

To make paper fortune cookies: cut (2) 3-1/4" and (1) 3-1/2" circle. The fortune (computer generated) : "Happy New Year: Good Health in the Year of the Tiger"

Sponge all around the edges of the circle with Close to Cocoa ink:

Place the fortune inside , then fold circle as shown ( do not make a hard fold crease):

To make the shape: push in the folded center with your thumb, place a mini glue dot inside about 3/4" from the cookie edge

Here is what needed to make the Punched Tiger:

(1) 1-1/2" Circle in More Mustard CS for the head

(2) 1" Circle in More Mustard CS for the ears

(2) 1/2" Circle In Pretty in Pink CS for the inside of the ears

(2) 1/2" Very Vanilla CS for the cheeks

(1) Small Heart from Heart to Heart Punch in Real Red for the nose

(1) Real Read punched Horizontal Slot for the tongue

(2) 1/4" Circles in Black CS for the eyes

Assemble Tiger and apply dimensionals to the back, then place on Punched Gold 1-3/4" Circle. Note: the tiger stripes, whiskers, and dots on nose are randomly hand drawn using a Black Stampin' Write Pen. This tiger was also posted on 2/5.

Mask the take out box bottom (see the yellow post-it note) and stamp the bamboo using the Versmark ink:

Locate the center of the box about 3/4" down from the top, pierce through for the metal chenille. Push the chenille through the holes, decide on the appropriate height and secure ends inside (see next photo).

More RAKs and Chinese New Year

(RAKs = Random Acts of Kindness) It's been really hectic this month already: with Valentine's Day happening on the same day as Chinese New Year: a double celebration for me being a 4th generation Asian American. The Year of the Tiger: Chinese New Year celebration will be a period of 2 weeks so I will be posting some Asian items to share.............We, as a family, celebrated the opening of Chinese New Year with a traditional family dinner at home on February 14. It was also a day of wishing each other well and passing out Lucky Red Envelopes (lai see) to those that are unmarried and young children. In addition, we pay respect to our ancestors who are no longer with us by lighting ceremonial incense and bowing 3 times. There is an abundance of oranges and tangerines (symbolizing wealth) to hand out. This first RAK is from Maya who made this Asian inspired calendar.

This card is from Frances - she knows I absolutely love these little Asian Girls. She also used my favorite paper: Sending Love DSP in combination with Real Red, With all my Heart stamp set, and the new Extra Large Fancy Flower punch.

Frances also gave me a basket filled with sweet Asian treats. The basket is embossed in gold and embellished with Washi paper.

The fortune cookie, rice bowl and Japanese slippers are so appropriate for this card!

Thoroughly Modern File Folder Gifts

The SU Thoroughly Modern File Folders are the perfect paper weight for many projects. Here's another one: a note book to give, personalized with an initial.

When the notebook portfolio is opened, there is a pen on the side (held in place by grosgrain ribbon), post it notes on the left along with giant paper clips in the pocket.

There is a tutorial on Split Coast for this notebook holder. I tweaked the measurements to suit the notepad. Here's the Thoroughly Modern File Folder assortment: 4 designs.

Left photo: Here are some of the items used to complete this project
Right photo: Instead of scoring 3-1/8" across the bottom (instructions from Split Coast), I scored 2-7/8". I also added sticky tape to the areas as pointed out by the pink arrows. Hint: be sure to measure the note pad size and height to be used and adjust the measurements accordingly.

Left photo: Use the 3/16" corner punch on the notebook flap edge. Remember that 1/4" strip that was cut off the right side of the file folder? Don't toss it - use it to re-enforce the notebook edge. Trim length. Add sticky strip along the edge, use corner punch on both ends and adhere.

Right photo: This is the cut out piece from the file folder that will be used for the front. Trim off the scored 1/2" section as shown. Set aside.

Left side: Use the left side cut out portion for the paper clip flowers. There's just enough for (4) flowers and (2) punched 1-3/8" circles.

Right side: Apply Pop Up glue dots to one side of the flower and add the paper clip. position the 2nd flower on top. Then add the punched 1-/8" Circle with dimensionals on top of the flower (ooops, I changed the color to Rose Red for more contrast). Stamp "bee Happy" on Whisper White, color with Crushed curry, adhere to 1-3/8" Circle. Paper clips are completed.

Left side: Front Flap cover has initial with white taffeta ribbon in a double knot. Wide Oval in Soft Suede popped with dimensionals and remember that square that was set aside ......this is where it will be used. The square was trimmed down to fit the "J".

Right photo: Use clear Velcro on the right side flap. Position the other side of the Velcro and adhere to the left side. Apply sticky tape to the back of the Rose Red CS as shown. Remove sticky tape backing, adhere the square onto the front flap.
